It’s such an extremely famous short story written by Mark Twain–”The Million Pound Note”, which I have read before when I was in middle school. It’s short but impressive that I can remember the plots in the work. Then more details appear to my mind after I learn the American literature and culture. What touched me most at that time were the ironic words and the interesting stories in the books. As a result, I read part of his novels at that time. Here I will introduce “One Million Pound Note” to you and make quite a few comments on the story.
One million pounds is about a poor but honest man, American Adam Henry. When he was wandering in the street of London, he received one -million- pound note inside a letter sent by two brothers. Later he got to know that the two billionaires brothers had made a bet about the results after he got one million-pound note. The elder brother argued that he would stare to death since he couldn’t live on a note. On the contrary, the younger believed that he would live an exceedingly good life.
From then on, Henry Adams spent 30 days abroad with that note. And the plot went just out of many readers’ expectation. He became a bright focus of the money-priority society. When he had to pay a bill, he took out the note and asked for a change. Faced with a millionaire, the manager showed more friendship and flattery instead of asking for pennies. So he managed to have more and more free deal, and his social status was becoming higher and higher. Apart from that, he later got a beautiful wife. Undoubtedly, a bright future was coming to him.
“One million pounds note” is an overwhelmingly good novel. The article satires the thoughts of “money is everything,” “money is omnipotent,” and expose the ugly face of capitalist society.
From my point of view, the One Million Pounds Note take an interesting, satirical look at the hypocrisy stemming from class distinction in England. England is a country where class and wealth are given extreme significance. It is similar in our modern society that we tend to money worship. However, we must realize that there are many things which can’t be bought with money such as love or friendship. Money may be important to us, but not the most important.
In my heart, Henry was so lucky, not everyone can get the chance to use the million. But we pay no attention to our heroine’s honesty and kind. Only by keeping honesty and consciousness inside can we manage to keep the wealth.
To sum up, on the one hand, this story tells us to be an honest man, on the other hand, it reveals that money is not omnipotent, and many things are more important than money.
